Several bursa are seen around the knee:
- Suprapatellar
- Prepatellar (most common)
- Infrapatellar
- Pes Anserine
Infrapatellar Bursitis is often referred to as the “clergyman’s knee”. The bursa may become inflamed or injured by kneeling on hard surfaces such as with construction type occupations like carpentry.
Treatment for infrapatellar bursitis consists of anti-inflammatory medications, ice therapy, aspiration, and possibly antibiotics if infection is suspected or confirmed. Surgery—debridement and excision of the bursa—is only done if the bursa is severely inflamed, if conservative treatments fail, or if the bursa is infected.
